Glucosamine or NSAIDs?
(Asprin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen)
Glucosamine is an extremely popular dietary supplement, but is it effective?
Osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint diseases have become a much too frequent diagnosis, whether due to our depleted overall nutritional status, or the general aging of the population as a whole. The result is a rapidly escalating use of a class of compounds referred to as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This category of prescription and over the counter products, which include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, is a rapidly expanding multi-billion dollar industry.
NSAIDs are effective at reducing inflammation, but these compounds are some of the more toxic medications dispensed from the pharmacy or purchased over the counter. Short term and long term side effects involving, stomach, kidneys, and liver are of major concern, especially with frequent use. In addition, NSAIDs only reduce the symptoms, while the underlying disease continues to progress.
Glucosamine is a dietary supplement that has become very popular as an alternative treatment for painful joints associated with Osteoarthritis, and inflammation. Millions of people will attest to its effectiveness, and research is showing that Glucosamine does enhance the integrity of joints and connective tissue. It is important to note that it shifts the focus of care more toward having the body manage function, instead of just treating symptoms.
Glucosamine is a key building block in the complex synthesis of cartilage and connective tissue, but as we age its levels diminish and the body stops making cartilage. When taken as an oral supplement we “jump start” the cartilage making mechanism again.
Glucosamine is generally derived from the chitin of marine shellfish, so if you have an allergy to shellfish it may be advisable to avoid this product. It also can cause some mild upset stomach in about 3% of the population, and may slightly increase blood sugar in patients with Diabetes.
The recommended dose is 500mg taken 3 times a day preferably with food. Glucosamine is often combined with Chondroitin, MSM, and a variety of other ingredients. Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids, with their overall ability to reduce the inflammatory response, enhance the effectiveness of Glucosamine.
Always work closely with your personal physician. Never stop taking prescribed medication without the advice of your physician.
